Ice Lake
TIPS
FOR FIRST TIME VISITORS
- This is a fairly difficult hike, and
should not be attempted unless you are in good physical condition.
- Be sure to check with a nearby Forest
Service location for the latest information on the use of campfires,
snow levels, and any other specific trail information.
- Water is prevalent along the trail.
A single Nalgene bottle or Camelbak is adequate. It will be all you can
do to stay out of the stuff.
- Consider using trekking poles if you
don't already use them. These are especially helpful on the downhill
terrain.
- Allow plenty of time for the hike.
Starting as early as possible is strongly recommended, particularly on hot
days. Take your time, especially when traversing the final 13 switchbacks to the top of the
lake. Monitor your breathing and heart
rate, and rest frequently if you feel especially fatigued.
- Go as light as possible. You will
be traversing a trail with a 3,300 foot gain, from 4500 to 7800 feet
elevation. Any additional weight will only make the trip more
difficult.
- Watch your footing. Be sure to use footwear suitable for difficult terrain.
- Don't forget the fishing gear,
especially a rod which lends itself to both flies and lures.
- The best campsites are located on the
south side of the lake on the isthmus. There appear to be three decent
sized sites with some privacy. More sites can be located along the rock
outcropping above the outlet, and maybe a few more above the creek just east
of the lake.
